Civicorps Elementary School is led by a talented group of administrators and teachers who demonstrate an unparalleled level of commitment in carrying forth the mission of the school. All teachers and administrators are fully credentialed and designated as highly qualified, according to the No Child Left Behind Federal Guidelines.  Many faculty members hold advanced degrees.

Clint Wilkins
Head of School

Clint.Wilkins@cvcorps.org

After a successful career creating and running innovative educational programs, Clint now serves as the Head of the Civicorps Elementary School. Clint was the founding headmaster of Sage Hill School, which enjoys a national reputation for its signature service-learning program. Very active in the charter school movement nationwide and in California, Clint served on the CivicorpsSchools board of trustees before becoming the school administrator in 2007. Clint holds an A.B. in history from Williams College and a Master ofDivinity from Harvard University.

Kathryn Mellin
Assistant Head of School

Kathryn has been the assistant principal for the past year, and on July1, 2008, she will become Civicorp Elementary School’s next principal.  Kathryn brings to the school vast experience on the elementary school level as a teacher, a coach and as an administrator.  She also is a participant New Leaders for News Schools, a prestigious national program that identifies talented educators and prepares them for principalships.  During the current year Kate has focused on being the school’s instructional leader.  In that capacity she has overseen the refinement of our curriculum, the installation of a comprehensive interim assessment program and is leading our professional development.  Kathryn is a graduate of UC Davis and Drexel University.

Angelina Vergara
Service Learning Coordinator

Angelina comes to us from Lighthouse Community Charter School, where she was a lead art teacher and advisor from 2004 to 2006. She has extensive experience implementing expeditionary-learning modalities for urban youth and with service learning models. Angelina has over 12 years of experience teaching academic subjects, visual and performing arts, and environmental curriculum. Angelina holds a MEdu from the University of San Francisco and a B.A. in Sociology with a minor in fine arts from Loyola College.

Julia Gelormino
Kindergarten Teacher

Julia has been with Civicorps Elementary School since 2006. She started as an intern with the Humboldt State University (HSU) Teachers Credential Program. She holds a B.A. in child development and education from UC Berkeley, where she graduated with high honors and was recognized as a distinguished scholar.  She also attended the University of Sydney’s Teachers College in Australia while working in an Aboriginal Australian elementary school. Prior to Civicorps, she was an academic coach for “Destination: College” in East Oakland’s Life Academy High and Think College Now Elementary.

Emily Roberts
Kindergarten Teacher

Emily is a kindergarten teacher at Civicorps Elementary School, having recently completed her master's degree in early childhood education from Mills College and before that a bachelor's degree in psychology from UC San Diego. Emily has four years of teaching experience. She is fluent in Spanish and holds a bilingual teaching credential.

K.C. Bull
First Grade Teacher

K.C. comes to Civicorps Elementary School with a B.A. in art from Bard College and a teaching credential from Mills College. K.C. helped initiate the Civicorps Elementary School's Peer Mediation program. Previously, she taught art in after-school programs, volunteered for a variety of youth gardening projects, and produced several short film documentaries.

Tamara Muniz
First Grade Teacher

Tami comes to us from the Sylvan Learning Center, where she was the director of education.  She also taught at the Growing Children Charter School for three years. Tami has five years of teaching experience and speaks fluent Spanish.  She holds a master's degree in education from UCLA, a B.A. in economics, and a B.S. in human development from UC Davis.

Elizabeth Leisy
Second Grade Teacher

Liz Leisy has four years of teaching experience. Her last teaching position was with St. Peter's School in San Francisco, where she taught kindergarten. She is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, and German. Liz holds a master's degree in education from the University of San Francisco and dual bachelor of arts degrees in Spanish and Portuguese from UC Berkeley.

Lamberto Roque
Second  Grade Teacher

Lamberto Roque, one of our second grade teachers, is in his first year at Civicorps Elementary School.  He has a BA from Cal State East Bay in Latin American Studies, a teaching credential from Mills College and four years of teaching experience.  Lamberto is originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, and is the published author of “Carta a Crispina.” 

Rachel Morgan
Third Grade Teacher

Rachel is in her third year as a teacher at Civicorps Elementary School, most recently having received a master's degree in education from Mills College. Rachel has extensive experience in teaching outdoor education programs and has worked in an after-school program emphasizing literacy skills.

Sarah Nilmeyer
Third Grade Teacher

Sarah first joined Civicorps Elementary School as an intern in 2005, becoming a full-time faculty member a year later. Sarah received her teaching credential through Humboldt State University (HSU) and holds a B.A. in elementary education from HSU. Sarah is keenly interested in civic literacy and community service.

Sumita Soni
Fourth Grade Teacher

Sumita Soni teaches fourth grade.  She has a BA in history and a minor in art from UC Davis, and a Masters in Education from UC Berkeley.  For several years she taught visual arts in Los Angeles.  Last year she taught fifth grade at Sankofa Elementary School in Oakland.  Sumita plays a leadership role with Teachers for Social Justice and is passionate about making education more equitable for students of color. 

Abdul-Haqq Khalifah
Fifth Grade Teacher

Abdul-Haqq has been with Civicorps Elementary School for five years, two as an intern and the last three years as a full-time classroom teacher. Abdul-Haqq holds a B.A. in urban studies from San Francisco State University and a teaching credential master's degree from the University of San Francisco. He is a member of the Leadership Team and coaches in the peer mediator program.

Anthea Tjuanakis
Visual Arts Teacher, All Grades

Anthea is our visual arts teacher.  She has a BA with a double major in American Studies and Art History from Stanford and has been a Fellow with Arts for Youth at the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C.  For two years Anthea worked at MOCHA (Musuem of Children’s Art) on Oakland.  While there she was a teacher, a curriculum developer, a teacher trainer and the museum’s coordinator.  In the 2006-07 school year Anthea was the art instructor with our After School Program.

Frank Turco
Arts Teacher, All Grades

Frank holds a B.A. in Theater Arts, with an emphasis on physical theater. Before coming to Civicorps Elementary School he toured the country with two traveling children's ensembles-Traveling Lantern Theater Company and the National Theater for Children. At Civicorps Elementary School, Frank has written several original songs and plays that have been integrated into our science curriculum.
