An Introduction

Our charter schools and community-based programs prepare adults, youth, and children for democratic participation by:

  • developing their academic skills and knowledge;
  • increasing their sense of civic and environmental responsibility;
  • fostering their sense of caring toward others; and
  • building their capacity to improve their own lives.

Our Core Programs

The Civicorps Academy charter school opened in 1996 to help Corpsmembers earn their high school diplomas.

Once corpsmembers test at a ninth-grade proficiency-level, they enter the Field Academy. The Field Academy supplements academics with curriculum-tied work programs. Field Academy students who have shown initiative and leadership may apply for various internship programs.

Civicorps members who are accepted into the Recycling Program continue taking academic classes, but are also given further opportunities to develop a variety of job skills.

The Civic Justice Corps, a new program, supports corpsmembers who are or have been "court-involved."

The Civicorps Elementary School serves grades K-5. Our school combines traditional academics with an interdisciplinary approach to the arts, environmental awareness, and civic engagement.

The Institute (Institute for Citizenship Education and Teacher Preparation) partners with graduate students, experts, and community leaders to develop replicable models and resources for fostering civic literacy among elementary age youth. The Institute also offers a distance-learning teaching credential program through Humboldt State University.

    "It is a fact that this program changes the lives of those who want a change. I am an example and proof of that."
